What was your journey to HashiCorp like, and what do you do at the company?

I have nearly two decades of experience leading engineering teams and driving significant projects across various domains. As Director of Engineering at HashiCorp, I lead R&D engineering for India, where we’re aiming to expand the company's footprint and spearhead key initiatives for future growth. My role involves setting up and scaling teams, defining hiring processes, and creating charters for initiatives across multiple HashiCorp product portfolios, including Terraform, Vault, Consul, and Boundary. Previously, I held leadership positions at GitHub, Amazon, Walmart Labs, Akamai Technologies, SAP Ariba Technologies, and Manhattan Associates Inc.

Can you describe a typical day at the Bengaluru co-working space?

A typical day at the Bengaluru co-working space involves a blend of structured meetings and informal interactions. The team gathers for discussions, whiteboarding sessions, and project reviews, ensuring alignment and progress on key initiatives. We often meet over coffee for small talk and brainstorming, fostering a collaborative atmosphere. Team lunches are a regular feature, creating a relaxed opportunity to bond and share ideas.

How would you describe your leadership style?

My leadership style is strategic and inclusive, focusing on team empowerment, innovation, and continuous learning. I prioritize clear communication, setting achievable goals, and fostering a collaborative environment. I value the power of productively guiding others and believe that achieving goals and earning the loyalty of others is the real measure of success. I aim to empower my team, encourage innovation, and lead by example. I possess strong technical skills and actively engage in technical and architectural discussions to help steer the team's direction.

What do you enjoy the most about working at HashiCorp?

The opportunity to build and lead a talented team, drive impactful projects, and innovate in the cloud infrastructure space. Being part of a company that values continuous learning and supports innovation is incredibly fulfilling. I love the emphasis on kindness and empathy in our daily interactions and the drive to create elegant, user-friendly solutions that function well and delight our users.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to reach a leadership position in the tech industry?

Focus on continuous learning, embrace challenges, and develop strong communication and strategic thinking skills. It's important to build and lead diverse teams, set high performance standards, and stay up-to-date with industry trends. Cultivating a competitive spirit and striving for excellence are keys to achieving leadership positions. Seek out opportunities that others might miss and be prepared to take decisive action.

Can you share an experience you found influential?

Earning a Certificate of Specialization in Leadership and Management from Harvard Business School had a big influence on me. This experience significantly shaped my leadership approach and professional growth. Additionally, my experiences at companies like Ariba, Amazon, GitHub, and Akamai, where I led large teams and drove significant projects, instilled the importance of strategic thinking, risk-taking, and the power of effective leadership.
